VA Monthly Compensation Estimator
Estimate your monthly tax-free VA disability compensation based on rating and dependents.
Free, no sign-in, and built on the current VA rate tables. The calculator runs in your browser on this page.
How the compensation table works
VA pays a fixed monthly amount for each combined rating, and the amount is tax-free. The rates in this calculator took effect December 1, 2025, after a 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment, and VA publishes a new table each December.
From 30 percent up, the rate rises for a spouse, for each child, and for a dependent parent. Below 30 percent the veteran-alone rate is the only rate. A spouse who needs regular aid and attendance adds a further amount at each rating.

A worked example
A 70 percent rating with a spouse and two children
- Veteran with spouse and one child at 70 percent: $2,074.45 a month.
- Each additional child under 18 at 70 percent adds $76.00, so the second child brings it to $2,150.45.
- Over a year that is $25,805.40, none of it taxed.
What this estimate leaves out
- Special Monthly Compensation, paid for specific losses such as loss of use of a limb or the need for aid and attendance, is not in this table.
- Children over 18 in school and dependent parents add different amounts than the child figure used here.
- The rate is what VA pays for the rating; whether a condition is rated at all is decided in the claim.
Questions veterans ask
Are the rates current?
Yes. They are the rates effective December 1, 2025. When VA publishes the next table, the rate file behind this calculator is updated and the date on this page changes with it.
Is VA disability compensation taxed?
No. It is not counted as income by the IRS and does not appear on a 1099.
Why does a 10 percent rating not pay more for a spouse?
Dependent additions start at 30 percent under the rate table. At 10 and 20 percent every veteran receives the same amount.
What is the difference between 90 and 100 percent?
About $1,576.28 a month for a veteran alone, the largest single step in the table, which is why the last ten points matter so much.
