A 0% VA rating still counts

A 0% service-connected rating pays nothing a month and unlocks more than most veterans expect: shopping on base, recreation, free care for the condition, travel pay, hiring preference and life insurance. What each one is, and where the line is.

A 0% rating is easy to read as a no. It is a yes with no money attached.

When VA rates a condition at 0%, it has decided two things. The condition is connected to your service, and right now it does not limit you enough to pay compensation for. The first decision is the one that matters. It does not expire, it is on record, and a list of benefits turns on it.

Two more are worth knowing about even though they do not need a rating at all, or need more than 0%:

  • The Military Lifetime Pass to national parks is free to any veteran, rating or not.
  • The VA home-loan funding-fee waiver, vocational rehabilitation and comprehensive dental each need something a 0% rating alone does not give. What a 0% rating does not unlock explains each one.

How to prove it

Every one of these asks you to show that you are service-connected. The document that does it is your VA benefit summary letter, downloaded from VA.gov in a minute. Getting your VA benefit letter walks through it, and Getting on base to shop covers the visitor-center step that comes first.

Two things worth knowing about 0% itself

VA calls a 0% rating a non-compensable disability, and its own page on the term lists health care, travel pay, dental care if you qualify, vision care and VALife as benefits that go with it. It also states a rule few veterans know: if you receive a second non-compensable rating and meet the requirements, VA raises the combined rating to 10% automatically, and 10% is a paid rating.

Your state adds its own benefits on top of VA's, from property-tax relief to licence-plate and hunting-licence programs, and many of them turn on a service-connected rating. VA keeps a directory of state veterans affairs offices.

What a 0% rating is not

It is not a ceiling. A condition rated 0% can be rated higher later if it gets worse, and the way to ask is a claim for an increase with current medical evidence. Nothing here predicts whether that would succeed; it is the normal path, and your claim workspace scores what evidence is on file for it.

It is also not a monthly payment, and no benefit on this page changes that. What they change is what the rating is worth in daily life.
